Experience

Sue Flicop and family

  • Co-President of the Bowen PTO and Co-President of the citywide PTO Council. I have focused on increasing collaboration with other community organizations to more efficiently and effectively use resources in Newton and in the public schools. I have also worked to improve communications, with a particular effort to inform parents about the budget process and important policy decisions.
  • BBA, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; MBA, Northeastern University; Ph.D. Candidate in International Transportation, University of Maryland. I have strong analytical skills, particularly in performing cost/benefit and regression analyses. As a teacher, I’ve planned and created syllabi, lessons, and exams for several business school classes.
  • Parent Representative, Newton Public Schools’ Strategic Planning Committee. I strongly support the implementation of our proposals, especially those that increase parent involvement, increase teacher job satisfaction, and expand the curriculum to challenge students at all levels. My experience on this committee has convinced me that—despite our budgetary limitations—we can still make significant improvements in these areas by embracing change and innovation.
  • Child Assault Prevention (CAP) Program volunteer. I have spent hours in elementary school classrooms observing firsthand the effects of School Committee decisions regarding budgets, class size, and other resources.
  • Former Board member, Newton Schools Foundation and the League of Women Voters in Newton; Current member, Newton History Museum Council; Current Board member and Programming Chair, The Bostonian Society.
